Session Descriptions

In the registration area journalists will need to choose 5 and analysts 4 out of the following 10 sessions. Please read through the descriptions carefully and note down which ones you would like to attend. In the registration section you will need to construct your own timetable. Sessions are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

1 / Original HP ink cartridges vs. alternatives

What do consumers look for when making purchasing decisions? Unsurprisingly, HP devotes much time to answering that question. In this session, we’ll cover the main print output features that concern your readers; show you and let you get your hands on equipment actually used by HP scientists in our labs, including several we’ve designed ourselves; lead you through both industry standard and HP testing methodologies – complete with tips and tricks to test performance to the maximum; and give you unfettered access to an independent testing house to discuss the hazards of working with cheap alternatives. In short, you’ll put all our marketing claims to the test.

2 / Advancements in Ink

HP inkjet technologies serve virtually every segment of the market. The printed output ranges from wallet-sized photos to documents, large format prints, banners and wraps that cover entire buildings. The types of HP inkjet technologies are as varied as the applications they serve. Led by Drs. Ross Allen and Nils Miller, this session begins with a tutorial on the principles underlying each of HP’s inkjet technologies and includes details of recent technology advances such as HP Edgeline and HP’s Optical Media Advance Sensor. Then, you will move to interactive modules where the principles of printing physics and engineering are tested in a lab environment. After attending this session, you will take away a deeper appreciation of HP’s scientific achievements in inkjet printing as well as an understanding of difficult choices that face all printing engineers and scientists during the R&D process.

3 / HP Edgeline innovation

HP recently announced new colour multi-function printers with Edgeline Technology, which are setting a new industry benchmark in business printing. The HP CM8000 series is the current pinnacle of HP's $1.4B R&D investment in Scalable Print Technology, from which Edgeline Technology was born. As other products come to market, what's in store for the industry and just how far and fast will ink-based printers really go? This session outlines the evolution of Edgeline technology and provides a hands-on session that explores the engineering behind HP's latest breakthrough printing invention.

4 / Inkjet Photographic Prints: Beyond Silver Halide

In less than 10 years Inkjet printing has overtaken and, in many aspects, surpassed Silver Halide as an output medium for photographs. Where are these two powerful photo printing technologies today? This session will compare and contrast Silver Halide and Inkjet with an eye to the future of professional and consumer photography. Quality metrics which originated in Silver Halide are extended into the digital domain for comparative analysis. The conclusions will be tested by photography and imaging experts using image files from their personal collections. Participants will engage in a systematic print test using these same files and HP professional Inkjet printers. A wide choice of media and the resulting impact on the visual impression will be part of this test.

5 / Toner Advancements and Ink Enhancements

This session offers the opportunity to explore both sides of HP’s printing portfolio. The first half concentrates on the latest in mono toner technology and what can be achieved with HP's printing system (printers + HP original supplies and media) with a sneak preview of future products, and in the hands-on session you will analyse prints through the professional's microscopic lens.
The second half will focus on why HP supports both ink and laser printers and outline criteria for selecting the best technology for the best results. Finally, you will be provided with insights into how to fairly compare the two different, yet complementary, technologies.

6 / Experience photography through HP’s lens

Come and see the light through HP's consumer photography system! In the consumer digital photography session you will learn how HP is "taming the light" and helping consumers get the most from the photographic experience, from learning how to optimise pictures for the light source, whether it's the sun or a common light bulb, right through to how the viewing light determines the appearance of the final photo. Learn how reflected light is melded, shaped and processed into a beautiful print, then find out how the information you add to the image, such as tags and metadata, impact what you can do with the photograph.

7 / Inside the HP camera

Digital cameras are complex technical marvels and this session will give you an expert look inside the camera to demonstrate the technology that produces the images. We will describe the assembly of the optics, how the image sensor and electronics work and how the image is processed, including techniques for extended depth-of-field imaging and obtaining high ISO speed. And we won't just stop at image production - we'll then give you a run down of which methods exist to measure the quality of the final result. We'll cover image quality analysis, test scenes, visual image analysis and a survey of available software for testing cameras. Attendees will receive a new version of image testing software.

8 / The reviewers guide to printers

This session contains everything you ever wanted to know about testing Single Function and All-in-One printers and takes you through the essentials of running a solid product test. It will give you the background to the recently released ISO page yield standard; show you how it works, what the pitfalls are and why HP actively supports it. The session will also explore the factors behind HP’s legendary quality and reliability and how we achieve the famed intuitiveness of our designs.

9 / Connections: The future of personal computing

Computing is about connectivity. For consumers that means connecting people to entertainment wherever they are. For businesses, it’s about connecting people to information. Ultimately, it’s about connecting people with people. Learn how HP is developing innovative ways for users to access and share their files anywhere. Take a peek at some of the latest developments that ease protecting and managing content, from entire photography collections to everything on a mobile device. See the newest products that continue HP’s strategy of marrying outstanding design with leading technologies for a truly fulfilling and connected user experience. HP’s Chief Technology Officer, Phil McKinney, will be your guide through this journey.

10 / Future

Where is HP heading? Find out during this session presented by experts from HP Labs, the legendary research and development centre that’s been keeping HP ahead in the market for over 40 years. We’ll show you how HP Labs is listening directly to customers to tackle one of the biggest questions of the day – how to display digital content in ingenious and creative ways. We’ll show you a new mobile technology that reacts directly with the environment, a commercial use for digital photography that uses information contained within the image, and we’ll demonstrate a new display technology that takes the concept of the billboard to new levels.
